I'm writing this even though I am so tired, am having trouble eating, sleeping, and walking. Since I'm also having trouble focusing, my husband has volunteered to see what I have typed with my eyes closed and fix it for me. Why am I even trying to write when my health is going down so quickly? I am doing this, making this effort for those who despair, who feel overwhelmed and discouraged. So many are so young and don't see the bright future that lies ahead of them.

Hope and Peace with Terminal Cancer

He Calms My Storms
Last night I realized how much the Lord is "carrying" me. Allergies woke me, then worries overcame me. It takes a lot of courage to have major surgery with major allergies. I have to travel several hours to have the cancer surgery and then back home. Also, though the cancer seems to be going into remission, it might just be a five year reprieve. When I read from the scriptures, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” I was able to at last feel at peace and rest. The Lord is my strength. I could not do this without His help.

Are we a becoming a nation of bullies?
I've been thinking about bullying since last week when a friend warned me about a new Facebook "hack" where a hurtful comment, supposedly from you and invisible to you, is inserted into your Facebook responses. I've been thinking about all the hate and just pure meanness that we see all around us, and I have been wondering why this is happening.
Are people seeing this cruel behavior modeled as "normal" in their entertainment? Yes, that is probably a factor, but you will have to evaluate the extent because I quit watching TV shows and current movies (except for the Hallmark type) years ago. When I saw darkness, hopelessness, violence, rudeness, crudeness, dishonesty, mocking the good, and selfishly using people portrayed as "normal", I flicked to the next channel, until finally, I just turned my TV off. The same with movies. When even the short advertising trailers made me cringe inside, I knew it would hurt me to watch it and make it a permanent part of my "memory banks", so I quit watching most new movies.
Perhaps, I am more shocked by the bullying today because my "frog" stayed out of the "pot" by avoiding the hidden agendas of those in Hollywood.

How God Guides Me
Sometimes, I'll just have a feeling that I should do something, or that I shouldn't do it. Sometimes I just know something. It might be that a person needs me to send them an email right then. Other times, I might just know what I should say to a grandchild, or I'll have an impression to write on my blog. I feel this flash of knowledge is a special gift to me. It affirms God's love for me.
At other times, God sends books to me. I used to find a book just sitting out on a library shelf that was exactly what I needed to learn at that time. In these days of hightec, the book I need is suggested to me online. I just know that I need to read that book, and when I do, there is the answer I was looking for. This is a special way that I receive revelation. It makes me feel that God really knows me personally and understands how I learn.
It is so comforting to know that God is close by. He is there to help, guide, and comfort. He gives me strength, and fills my heart with love and peace.

Peace at Christmas
We had only been married a few months, and as our first Christmas together approached, I became increasingly tired, pressured, and grouchy. I was also lonely. My husband was going to school and working full time with a two hour commute, so he was rarely home, leaving me alone in a small trailer with no transportation. Since he was a mailman, he was working overtime seven days a week to keep up with the holiday rush. Yes, I was lonely, but I felt I was learning to cope. I kept my environment bright and cheerful, put up decorations, played Christmas music, turned on the lights, and kept my entertainment positive and up-beat, avoiding sad tear-jerkers. I planned things to do and kept busy. What helped the most was finding another neighbor who’s husband also worked late. We spent many evenings together happily working on projects.
Faith - Choosing to Believe
I agree with you that you have to choose to believe. Some people no matter what experiences they have; no matter what they see, hear, or feel simply refuse to believe. I see the Lord's creations around me and I choose to believe in their creator. I have tried God's commandments and found them good and know they they have enriched my life and brought me and my family great happiness. I choose to believe in the giver of these guides to happiness. I have had many, many personal experiences where the Lord has helped and guided me. I trust my own experiences and choose to believe in a God who loves me. My brother once said to me that if there really was a God, then He should show Himself to him and he would believe.
Here is something to think about from the Book of Mormon - Alma 32:17 to 19
17 Yea, there are many who do say: If thou wilt show unto us a sign from heaven, then we shall know of a surety; then we shall believe.
18 Now I ask, is this faith? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for if a man knoweth a thing he hath no cause to believe, for he knoweth it.
19 And now, how much more cursed is he that knoweth the will of God and doeth it not, than he that only believeth, or only hath cause to believe, and falleth into transgression?

Will God Change Us and Make Us "Good" People?

A friend said to me, "Personally I believe human beings had better think of taking care of their own problems instead of waiting for some Father figure to come along and do it for us." I agree. What? You are a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, how can you say that? It's easy-- it is true. If you are waiting for God, like some "super Santa" to come and solve all your problems for you and make everyone be good and kind-- you are doing to have a long wait!

Payson Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
A couple of days ago my husband and I went to the open house for the temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Payson, Utah. This was extra special for me since this is the temple my husband and I will be attending.
Here some photos of the interior of the temple.

The pictures are beautiful, but can't really convey the sense of peace that is there. It is like you have stepped away from all the stresses of the world and are in a place of beauty and love. It reminds you of what life can be like and helps you put your problems into perspective. It gives you the hope and strength to continue on and to find joy in living. It is a little bit of heaven on earth.

Renaissance of Happy Marriages
This talk given at the Vatican in November by a leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Henry B. Eyring. He explains clearly how to have a happy marriage. He says:
"Where there is selfishness, natural differences of men and women often divide. Where there is unselfishness, differences become complementary and provide opportunities to help and build each other. Spouses and family members can lift each other and ascend together if they care more about the interests of the other than their own interests."
Here is the full transcript if you would like to read it. It really explains how to have a happy marriage.
I have seen in my own 42 year marriage how differences, with lots of love, can can bring us joy. http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/transcript-president-eyring-addresses-vatican-summit-marriage

a young woman. I had never seen her before, but the feeling came over
me that she was the best person I had ever seen. That evening she
walked into our church meeting in Cambridge.
Another thought came to my mind with great power: “If I could only
be with her, I could become every good thing I ever wanted to be.”
I said to the man sitting next to me, “Do you see that girl? I would
give anything to marry her.”
was in a temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The words spoken in the ceremony included a promise that we might
be husband and wife in this life and for eternity. The promise included
that whatever descendants we might have would be bound to us
forever if we lived worthy of that happiness. We were promised that
after this life, we could continue to enjoy whatever loving family
sociality we could create in life.
So we acted to make it possible through the great variety of
circumstances of life. There was sickness and health, struggle and
some prosperity, the births of six children, and eventually the births
of 31 grandchildren, and on the day I arrived I was told we had the
first great-grandchild. Yet with all the changes, there have been
consistencies since that wedding day more than 52 years ago.
day I met my wife. I have become a better person as I have loved
and lived with her. We have been complementary beyond anything
I could have imagined. Her capacity to nurture others grew in me
as we became one. My capacity to plan, direct, and lead in our
family grew in her as we became united in marriage. I realize now
that we grew together into one—slowly lifting and shaping each
other, year by year. As we absorbed strength from each other, it
did not diminish our personal gifts.
better whole. Rather than dividing us, our differences bound us
together. Above all, our unique abilities allowed us to become
partners with God in creating human life. The happiness that
came from our becoming one built faith in our children and
grandchildren that marriage could be a continuing source of
satisfaction for them and their families.
to ask why some marriages produce happiness while others
create unhappiness. Many factors make a difference, but one
stands out to me. Where there is selfishness, natural differences
of men and women often divide. Where there is unselfishness,
differences become complementary and provide opportunities

be able to make the hourly unselfish sacrifices necessary for
a happy marriage and family life—and to do it with a smile.
minds. The most persuasive logic will not be enough unless it
helps soften hearts. For instance, it is important for men and women
to be faithful to a spouse and a family. But in the heat of temptation

for each other and for their children. ‘Children are an heritage
of the Lord’ (Psalm 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their
children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical

observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens
wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—
will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these

is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within
the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother
who honor marital vows with complete fidelity.
Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded
upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages
and families are established and maintained on principles of faith,
prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work,
and wholesome recreational activities.
By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love
and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities
of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily
responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred
responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one
another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances
may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should
lend support when needed."[1]

between a man and a woman. Professor Lynn Wardle has said,
“The task we face is not for summer soldiers or weekend warriors
who are willing to work for a season and then quit."[2] A past
president of our Church, Gordon B. Hinckley, offered similar
counsel, as well as encouragement, saying, “We cannot effect a
turnaround in a day or a month or a year. But with enough effort,
we can begin a turnaround within a generation, and accomplish
wonders within two generations."[3]
States gather their families every day for prayer. Forty-one
thousand (41,000) individual families in Mexico read scriptures
together one to three times a week. Seventy thousand (70,000)
individual families in Brazil gather two or three times a month
for an evening of prayer, worship, and scripture reading.[4]

generations, happiness and peace will grow exponentially among
the worldwide family of God.

As we join together in this work, I promise progress toward that
happy result. In the name of Jesus Christ, whom I serve

Words of Comfort
I think this music is beautiful and peaceful. Enjoy. We generally think of joy and happiness at Christmas time, but I know of some people who are suffering. It is especially difficult to be hurting when others are merry. I was sorrowing with a person I love, and as I read from the scriptures I began to feel peace. Here are some words of comfort for those in need.

Guided and Blessed by the Lord
written by Cheryl Anne Merrick April 2008
I just wanted to share my experiences with you.
I have been promised that the Lord would bless me and guide me, and so He has (through a Priesthood blessing). I have had kind parents who have loved me and wanted me to be happy. I have been given the opportunity to hear the Gospel and join the Church when in my late teens. I’ve received a good education and training in elementary education. I have been blessed to meet my husband and become a wife and mother of four children and a grandmother. I live in an area with kind neighbors and have close friends. I have had the opportunity to serve others through Church and community service, writing, sending notes, tutoring, mentoring, and visiting. I can see, hear, think, and move. I am able to learn and grow. I have close relationships, especially with my husband. I have come to understand and develop my abilities, but more important, I have come to know the Lord and desire to be like him.

Why doesn't God stop bad things from happening?
If we try and do good things, should we be blessed with a life of ease and comfort? Is a wealthy person more righteous than a poor person? Should a loving God save us from all suffering? Should only the evil experience pain? What would life be like if all good deeds were immediately rewarded and all bad deeds immediately punished?

Christmas Questions
Christmas Questions
As I attempt to do more in two weeks
than I normally do in two months,
I begin to ask Questions.
Can I really do all this?
Should I be doing it?
Do I have the strength to do it?
Is it the best use of my limited energies?
Will it bring peace and joy into my life
and the lives of those I love?
Am I sacrificing things of eternal value
for things that are merely good?
Am I enjoying peace on earth?
Am I so busy doing things that
I forget the meaning of Christmas?
Am I savoring the season?
Am I remembering Christ?
I have written many other poems which I am posting on my other blog
