Happiness amid Adversity

I just heard of a man who is depressed because his wife is seriously ill. He just joined a Christian faith and was expecting to "live happily ever after", and now it isn't happening. I can remember feeling this way when I first became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I thought nothing "bad" was ever going to happen to me, and now I would just sail through life. Instead, I've had over 50 years of health problems.  Doesn't God answer my prayers? Doesn't God love me?

Yes, God does answer prayers. I wanted to be happy, and He is giving me experiences to teach me how to do it. I wanted to grow and become more like my Heavenly Father, and He has sent challenges to strengthen me and help me grow in love and compassion.

Why Do Bad Things happen to Good People?

I just read the book of Job and thought, “I identify with him”. Gratefully, I haven’t had to face the loss of all my children, and financial ruin, but I have had some rough times. When Job felt so rotten that he wished he hadn’t been born, I know that feeling.  Before it was discovered that I had Addison’s disease (very low Adrenal function), I was sick to my stomach, ached, could barely move, had smashing headaches, couldn’t focus, remember,  think or sleep well, and was depressed. Day and night merged. I never felt really awake nor asleep.

Why doesn't God stop bad things from happening?

Should all good be rewarded? 
If we try and do good things, should we be blessed with a life of ease and comfort? Is a wealthy person more righteous than a poor person? Should a loving God save us from all suffering?  Should only the evil experience pain? What would life be like if all good deeds were immediately rewarded and all bad deeds immediately punished?
