What Does God Think of Us?

https://www.lds.org/media-library/video/2014-01-001-abide-with-me?lang=eng

Who hasn't experienced a child who has the "gimmies". This child never has enough, doesn't appreciate what she has, and never even says, "thank you". She works on her never ending Christmas list year round. Though she doesn't even know what she has in her vast hoard, she is sure that she must possess more than anyone else has-- far more!

How about the youth who packs up his car with all he can lay his hands on from home, then heads out to be on his own, ignoring his parents --until he needs help. Then after disregarding all his parent's advice and counsel, he expects them to come running to bail him out. Arrogantly, he expects his parents to always be there for him, endlessly supplying his all wants. If ever they refuse to indulge him, he poutingly declares, "You don't love me".

Advantages of Getting Older

Yes, there really are advantages to getting older.
  • I've lived long enough to see consequences of actions. Things that seemed to be bad at the moment have turned out to be good in the long run. For example, my poor health has helped my husband become very loving and supportive.
  • I've learned whose advice I can follow. I've come to respect my husband's advice. I saw the counsel of the leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints come true. They counseled for years to get out of debt, live within your means, avoid Home Equity Loans, and store food and necessities. Those that followed this advice were all right when the "Down-Turn" came.
  • I've learned not to worry if children do immature things. They are learning. Have faith in them. Give them time, love, a good example, good principles, lots of encouragement, and trust God to make up the difference. Children usually become great adults because of, and in spite of, our efforts as parents.

Raising Active Children

I just found this article that I wrote a long time ago about our experiences of raising our children. Home computers were fairly new, so we had a new option for our children's time to cope with. It really took effort to encourage our children to lead active lives instead of just sitting at the computer or playing video games. Hope our experiences are a help to you.

Our children were always busy doing something. I have been asking myself why they didn’t just sit in front of the TV or computer all day.  I think the major reason was our family policy. Watching TV or playing on the computer were considered rewards, not rights. Play time was earned.

Though I’ll admit it was tempting, especially since I was often ill,  to consider using the TV as a babysitter to keep the children quiet and passive, we didn’t. TV was mainly limited to an hour or two in the evenings. As parents we were conscious of our example, so we didn’t just turn on the TV every spare moment to amuse ourselves or just keep us company.

We tried also to set an example of spending our time doing good things, and included our children in these projects. Our children helped rewire the house, learned to cook, washed cars,  planted gardens, and picked fruit. Besides projects, we provided regular work for them to do. We divided the upkeep of the house and yard and made assignments according to ability. Even toddlers were given small jobs to do.

Monitoring Media

REASONS FOR MONITORING MEDIA
(TV, Videos, Magazines, Music) -- I wrote this in 1992 when we had children at home. There is far more need to monitor media now than there was then. There are more ways you can use technology to help you be in control of what you and your family see and hear.

1. Whatever we experience becomes a part of us- we must use our agency to choose the good and avoid the evil and harmful

2. Each choice we make affects other choices- we must use our time wisely; when we watch TV all evening we may have just eliminated the time we could have helped children with homework, talked with teens, played games, studies scriptures together, read good books together and individually, served others and time to build our relationship as husband and wife- building relationships within a family takes a great deal of time - doing things together and talking

3. By not making conscious choices, we steadily loose the ability to choose- few people can turn on a TV "just to see what is on" and not stand there watching for at least a few minutes even something they don't want to see or that they wouldn't choose to turn the TV on for;  we expose ourselves to sights, songs, messages that we wouldn't purposely choose just because it is there before us

What do you, as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints think about Abortion?

I agree that there are times when there is something seriously wrong and for the health of the mother, it is necessary to abort the baby, but those circumstances would be very rare. Killing your baby just because it is "inconvenient" is murder. If a baby isn't wanted, then it is a "growth" in the woman's body to be gotten rid of and is disposed of in the garbage. If the child is wanted and is born very early, huge amounts of money are spent to keep the "child" alive. When you create life you are responsible for that child. If you do not want to care for it, then put the child up for adoption where it can have a family who will love and nurture it, but don't kill the child.

A society which allows parents to legally kill their children just because they don't want to bother with them, is scary! What next? There are those who want to be allowed to kill the old, the infirm, the imperfect. They claim this would be a "mercy" killing. My questions is when did they become God? Who gave them the right to decide who would live and who should die. To me this smacks of wanting to have a "strong, pure Aryan race", and we saw where that led as German society was "purified" by exterminating inconvenient foreigners -- the Jews.

Since I am old (yes, I admit it), and have several health "imperfections", I could see myself being designated as "impure" and "surplus population". I scares me to give mere people the power to decide who is "worthy" of life. I feel much more comfortable leaving those decisions to God.

The Reason Behind Christmas

I like this video about children helping an older man find joy in Christmas. Children can remind us of so much that is important. They have a joy in living. Sometimes as we get older we allow our hurts and disappointments to rob of of this joy.  It also reminds us of not letting commercialism take over and spoil our Christmas season.
