I am feeling confused and concerned today. So many things just don't make sense. Why are people simply believing all that Trump says? Why aren't they asking questions and getting the answers they deserve? Here are some of the questions I think need answers.
- Our President just incited a mob of people to "stop the steal" by marching on the Capitol building with the intent to disrupt the Constitutionally required certification process by Congress. Though most people do not approve of the violence, why are many of his supporters still excusing Trump's actions? They defend him saying that he was "defending freedom and right". Does that really make his actions "all right"?
- If the protesting group had been a Black Rights, Women's Rights, or Latino Rights, would this behavior still be "justified"?
- If, after the last election, Hillary Clinton had convinced a group to march on the Capitol to prevent Congress from confirming Trump as President, would that have been "just and right"?
- In a Democracy where we believe in rule by law, why are Trump supporters trying to force their will on the majority of the people who voted for Biden instead?
- I've heard them justify their support by saying that the laws are corrupt and the election was rigged even though 86 judges (several being Trump's own appointees), the Electoral College, local election officials, State Governors, and now Congress all agree that this was an honest, fair election making Biden our next President. Why aren't supporters believing this multitude of people?
- Why is it that Trump considered the vote from all the states that voted for him as "fair, honest, and accurate", but the vote in the states which did not vote for Trump as "dishonest, inaccurate and fraudulent"?
- Why does Trump consider the other Republicans who won elections in these same "dishonest" states using the same procedures and with the same election personnel as accurate?
- Though Trump has demanded recounts, and after Trump even offered a reward for "evidence of voter fraud", all that was found were a few more votes for Biden. That is until our President attempted create his own voter fraud by pressuring Brad Raffensperger, Georgia's Secretary of State, to "find" him enough votes to overturn Biden's victory in his state. After refusing to illegally "steal" votes from the people in Georgia and give them to Trump, Raffensperger publicly posted the entire hour long phone call from Trump. I had expected others to be as shocked as I was that our President would try and change election results, a criminal offense, but from what I could see, it was mainly ignored among his supporters. Why?
- Trump claimed that mail in votes were "fraudulent" and should not be counted. Again, I was shocked. My President was saying that my vote and those of many other older people, those who are ill, have transportation problems, or are living outside of the country, such as military personnel, should be "stolen" from us. How could he say that we only had the right to vote if we were willing to risk our lives by going out during a frightening pandemic?
- Why was mail in voting not contested when it helped Trump to win his election four years ago?
- We know that it is possible to "rig" an election. People can show counterfeit ID when they vote in person or take registered mail voters ballots and forge signatures, but it is nearly impossible to do it for any large election without being caught. Why are people believing that a voting option which began around 1900 and has been proven to be reliable has suddenly become corrupt?
- Why are news reports, government reports, judges' decisions, lawyers' statements, governors' and other state and federal officials' statements, military and medical leaders' and respected professors' comments, all being discounted? Some supporters parrot Trump by saying that they are all "lying" and they are "evil". Really? Should we believe that Trump and his "Yes-men" are the only people in the entire world who are "good" and who are telling us "the truth"?
- I've seen too many elections in my 70 years to believe that Trump is the ONLY person who cares about our freedom, or the ONLY person who can make "America great again", or that our nation will be "destroyed" if Trump is not our President. Trump has had the opportunity to try to make our country "great" for four years. Why hasn't he done it?
- Another thing I can't believe is the "Conspiracy Theory" Trump has been Tweeting about since way before the election. I guess he anticipated losing and wanted to be prepared. I just find it hard to believe that government officials across the nation who rarely work together on anything would come together to "plot" against Trump. Even beyond belief is that they could also pull many election workers into the "plot", and everyone has somehow managed to keep it "secret". I find it far easier to see Trump not as the "poor victim", but as a spoiled rich kid who grew up expecting everything he wants to be given to him and who is refusing to accept that not only the Congress, the courts, and other officials, but the majority of the people of the United States won't give him what he wants - the Presidency.
