The Million Dollar Question
My husband dislikes the "million dollar question". It usually comes up when I have requested that something be done to improve our home. He, a builder, authoritatively declares, "IT CAN'T BE DONE!!" As a undauntable idealist who has complete faith in the achieve-ability of good goals, I calmly question, "If someone offered you a million dollars to do this, could you?" After a slight pause, he concedes, "Yes". I respond that it is then not a matter of impossibility, but of motivation, and I am motivated. After that, we work together to achieve the goal. Actually, now after being married to me for 46 years, my husband knows that if I say something can be done-- it can. He skips the fight phase and simply goes straight into "working it out" mode.
So many people tell me that the world is just dark, and people are evil, and that there is nothing that can be done, so I should just give up. Do I bubbleheadedly run after impossible dreams? Do I ignore "the real world"? Do I naively hide my eyes from all the evilness in the world? No, but it doesn't matter. There is always the million dollar question. Light always has, and always will, dispel darkness.
If people want to be good, they could. If you wait until everyone chooses to do good things before you do, then you will have a long wait. Start with a smile, a small kindness, thank the cashier, return the extra change, or be truthful on your tax return. Change begins with small individual acts, done by people who have begun to realize the great power they have to create the life, and world, they want.
