What Happens When We Die?

When I wrote about being happy to have another birthday, I said that I wasn't afraid of dying. I thought I should explain why I said that.

I think most people are afraid of dying because they don't know what will happen to them. Some people think they will just cease to exist. Many people envision their spirit continuing in a place where there is not any suffering or pain, but where they will be single without their family. Though they have hoped and promised in this life that "their love will continue forever", they aren't sure it will.

What does happen after you die? Will you really cease to exist? Will you lose your body and be just be a spirit forever? Will your marriage and family be gone?

If all this was true, I certainly wouldn't want to my time on earth to ever end. But since I know that death is simply the transition from our mortal life into a new life filled with endless possibilities, why should I be afraid of it? This next life will be a time where I can live with my Heavenly Father, where I can keep learning and growing, where I can have a real, eternal, unbreakable, non-aging body, and where I can continue being with my husband and children in an eternal family.

You might be thinking that this sounds like a wonderful dream and be wondering how I can possibly know what is going to happen after this life. How can we know anything that we ourselves have not yet experienced? We learn from others who do know.

Heavenly Father loves us and wants us to know what we can expect after this life, so we can prepare for it. Through His prophets, God has revealed what we need to do to be happy now and after this life. After we leave here, we will each have the life which we have chosen by our desires, thoughts, and actions.

Our Savior has made it so that every person who lives on this earth will have reunited forever our spirit and our body, in a resurrected immortal form. What our life will be like, though, will depend on us. In this life if we choose to follow the teachings of our Savior, then our Savior can give us the opportunity to grow, to be happy, and to have our family forever.   If we won't do the things our Savior has advised us to do, we will not be able to continue learning, for we have turned away from change and growth, and we will not learn how to love, so we will not be able to have continuing family relationships.

What will our life be like after this life? It will be whatever we choose it to be.
