I saw this five minute video a couple of days ago, and even though I've been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for nearly 50 years, I was surprised by some of the things it said. Over the years, I've seen the benefits in my life of eating lots of fruit and vegetables and only a little meat. Since I have problems with my adrenal glands, living a healthy lifestyle has greatly improved my quality of life. In fact, it has been startling for me to learn that, with my condition, if I had been having caffeine, alcohol, or smoking, I might not still be here.
I've also thought a lot about healthy living, because I've been deeply affected by losing so many family members to lung cancer and alcoholism. It has been so heartbreaking to not only witness their pain, but the suffering it has caused the rest of our family. As a young girl, I will never forget watching my Grandma Groom and my Grandpa Crane suffer with lung cancer and die early.
Living a healthy life is very personal for me. My life literally depends on it. My "Word of Wisdom" also includes not eating foods I'm allergic to such as cow's milk and wheat, exercising in moderation, resting when I'm tired, relaxing, and not pushing myself.
What I haven't been aware of before has been the historical context in which the "Word of Wisdom" was revealed. I know that we are given revelation in answer to our questions, and I know God gave us these principles because He loves us and wants to help us live healthy and happy lives. What I hadn't realized was that these health teachings were in answer to the current social concerns of that time. Hope you find this as interesting as I did.
Here is what is called "The Word of Wisdom" incase you would like to read it for yourself. D&C 89
