"Sophistication"

As I witness our culture becoming more and more "sophisticated", I am concerned about the increasingly simplistic and intolerant portrayal of those who do not conform to "modern morality".  Anyone who does not follow the contemporary mindset is viewed as callow and naive. For example, they consider those who believe in God as gullible beings who mindlessly follow some dogma. To substantiate this assertion, these "enlightened" souls give "evidence", such as, stating that all religious people believe the earth was created in only seven days.  Really!  Is this the assertion of wise, knowledgeable, experienced people? It sounds more like sophistry than sophistication to me!

Has all this worldly wisdom disintegrated into arrogant snobbery and bigoted persecution of anyone who is not following their prescribed dogma. Is this really an expression of "righteous indignation", or merely an excuse for bullying? Is this movement simply a grown-up version of teen conformity, with their criticism of non-conformers the latest version of peer pressure?  Has the sophisticates seeking of urbane culture morphed into merely a mindless cult? Why are these "open-minded" people so consumed with hate? What are they afraid of? Why are they so intolerant of others who see the world differently?   Is society moving forward or backward? Are the freedoms guaranteed to us in the Bill of Rights no longer "relevant" ?
