Why Does God Send Revelation Through Prophets?

A friend stated that she thought everyone should have the opportunity for revelation not just church leaders, and she felt the revelations to leaders were “too pragmatic”. This is my response.

Yes, I agree that there is a great power and strength that comes from reading the scriptures. The Lord sends us revelation for our lives as we read His word. It is incredible how each time we read a verse it can give us new insight and guidance. Having the scriptures is a great blessing in our lives.

I agree that the Lord sends revelation to anyone who is willing to receive it. I have experienced much revelation in my own life and I know you have too. This is a wonderful comfort and blessing. Revelation to guide the Lord's Church on the earth must come through those who the Lord has appointed to lead His Church, or there would just be confusion. This gives unity to the Church.

In the days of the early church, Peter was given revelation to guide the church. Even at that, many people claimed they had other revelation such as those who wanted to incorporate Mosiac law into Christianity. Peter and Paul were constantly trying to keep the Gospel teachings as Christ taught them.

Being the prophet of the early church, Peter was given the revelation that nothing was unclean with the Lord. From this he realized that the Gospel was now to be taken to the Gentiles. I think it is interesting to note that this revelation to Peter was a direct response to Cornelius' prayer (and probably many other Gentiles). Also Moses was given revelation about leading the Israelites out of Egypt, but only after many years of pleadings from the people. I don't think we generally receive revelation unless we ask for it and are ready and willing to follow it.

God does not change. He works in the same way in these times. Church leaders served prison sentences for their beliefs for many years before the Lord had tried their faith and obedience sufficiently and finally allowed the practice of polygamy to be discontinued. There were also many years of pleadings and trial before the blacks were given the priesthood. This has always been how the Lord has worked. He tries our faith, and waits til we ask for His help.

Like with Peter, revelation to The Church allows the Lord to direct His work and bring to pass His purposes. It allows for sure direction in our lives and the ability to deal with changing circumstances as the Lord would have us do.

The Lord sends revelation to anyone who is willing to receive it. I have experienced much revelation which has helped me solve problems in my own life. Revelation to guide the Lord's Church on the earth though, must come through the person who the Lord has appointed to lead His Church, His Prophet, or there would be confusion. This gives unity to the Church and enables us to have the Lords guidance in dealing with current issues and problems.

Even at that, many people claimed they had other revelation such as those who wanted to incorporate Mosiac law into Christianity. Peter and Paul were constantly trying to keep the Gospel teachings as Christ taught them.

Today there are many people who want to change God's teachings to fit what they think. This is why God works in the same way in these times--through Prophets.
